Billboard Occupancy Rate: How to Calculate and Raise It
By Gabie Research · Updated Oct 12, 2026 · 4 min read
Short answer
Billboard occupancy rate is the share of your sellable time that is sold. For printed faces, divide sold face-days by sellable face-days. For digital faces, divide sold slot-days by slots times days. If 896 of 1,120 face-days are sold, occupancy is 80%. Big public operators don't publish the number, but Lamar says its occupancy is at a peak.
- Occupancy = sold time ÷ sellable time. Use face-days for printed boards and slot-days for digital.
- Leave out faces that can't be sold, such as boards down for repair or past a lease.
- Count paid ads in the main number. Track free, public service and house ads apart.
- Lamar, OUTFRONT and Clear Channel Outdoor don't publish an occupancy rate. OUTFRONT reports revenue per display.
- Track occupancy with rate. A full board at a low rate can earn less than a 90% board.
Billboard occupancy rate is the share of your sellable time that is sold. For printed faces you count face-days. For digital faces you count slot-days. If 100 face-days were open to sell and 80 were sold, occupancy is 80%.
What is billboard occupancy?
Occupancy tells you how full your boards are. It does not tell you what you charged. A board can be full at a low rate. That is why you track rate too.
Lamar names occupancy as one of three ways it grows revenue. The other two are raising rates and adding displays (Lamar 10-K).
Count only time you could sell. Leave out days a face is down for repairs. Leave out faces past their ground lease or permit.
How do you calculate occupancy for printed faces?
Use face-days. One face for one day is one face-day.
Occupancy = sold face-days ÷ sellable face-days
Here is an example. Riverbend Outdoor has 40 printed faces. A four-week period has 28 days.
| Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sellable face-days | 40 faces x 28 days | 1,120 |
| Sold face-days | 30 faces x 28 days, plus 4 faces x 14 days | 896 |
| Occupancy | 896 ÷ 1,120 | 80% |
Count paid ads in the main number. Track free ads, public service ads and house ads in a second number. Those fill the face but bring in no cash.
How do you calculate occupancy for digital faces?
A digital face shows several ads in a loop. OAAA says six to eight ads often share one face. Each ad shows for six to eight seconds (OAAA). Each ad holds one slot. So you count slot-days, not face-days.
Digital occupancy = sold slot-days ÷ (slots x days)
Take face D-031. It has 8 slots in its loop.
| Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sellable slot-days | 8 slots x 28 days | 224 |
| Sold slot-days | 5 slots x 28 days, plus 1 slot x 14 days | 154 |
| Occupancy | 154 ÷ 224 | 69% |
One slot in an 8-slot loop is one-eighth of the time. That is a 12.5% share of voice. If you sell by share of voice, count sold loop time the same way. The digital loop calculator does this math for you.
What should count as sellable?
Your answer sets the bottom of the math. Be strict and be the same every month.
- Count faces with a live lease, a valid permit and a rate.
- Count days the face can show an ad, even if no one bought them.
- Leave out days the face is down for repairs or a new build.
- Leave out time past the end of a ground lease or permit.
- Leave out digital slots you keep for your own use, if you never sell them.
Measure each four-week period. Then look at the year. A face that is empty in January and full in May still tells you something. It may need a lower winter rate or an early push.
What occupancy do big operators report?
None of the three big public operators gives an occupancy rate. We checked the latest annual reports from Lamar, OUTFRONT and Clear Channel Outdoor.
Here is what they do say:
| Company | What it reports | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Lamar | CEO on occupancy, February 2026 | "Still at what I would call peak average annual occupancy" |
| Lamar | Where growth comes from | "Primarily coming through rate" |
| OUTFRONT | Billboard yield, Q2 2026 | $3,344 per display per month, up 12% |
Sources: Lamar Q4 2025 call, Billboard Insider.
Yield is revenue per display. It mixes occupancy and rate in one number. So when a big operator is near full, it grows by raising rates. A smaller operator with many open faces has room on both.
How do you raise occupancy?
Most open faces stay open for plain reasons. No one knew they were open, or no one asked a buyer. These steps help.
- Know what is open, by date. Keep one calendar of every face. Don't rely on memory.
- Let stale holds expire. A hold that never turns into a deal blocks a real buyer.
- Start renewals early. Talk to the advertiser two months before the flight ends. See billboard renewals.
- Prospect for each open face. Look for local businesses near the board. See how to find billboard advertisers.
- Check the rate. Compare open faces with sold faces of the same size in the same market.
- Sell short flights on digital. One slot for two weeks still fills slot-days.

Questions people ask
What is a good billboard occupancy rate?
There is no public benchmark. Lamar, OUTFRONT and Clear Channel Outdoor don't publish one. Lamar's CEO said in February 2026 that it was at 'peak average annual occupancy' and that growth now comes mostly from rate.
How do you calculate occupancy for a digital billboard?
Count slot-days. Multiply the slots in the loop by the days in the period. Then divide the slot-days you sold by that total. A face with 8 slots has 224 slot-days in 28 days.
Do free or public service ads count toward occupancy?
Count them apart. They fill the face but bring no revenue. A main number with only paid ads shows what you really sold.
Is occupancy the same as yield?
No. Occupancy is how much time you sold. Yield is the revenue you earned per display. OUTFRONT reports yield, which was $3,344 per display per month in Q2 2026.
How do you raise billboard occupancy?
Know what is open by date, let stale holds expire, start renewals early and prospect for each open face. Then check that the rate on open faces fits the market.
